LPAR
Logical Partition, a virtual, independently licensed IBM i instance running on a shared physical Power server.
Multiple LPARs on the same physical machine each carry their own IBM i software license and user count -- a major driver of total software cost when a shop consolidates multiple partitions onto one Power server. The Midland Information Systems example in our tier economics dataset shows a 4-partition configuration costing roughly $176,141 in IBM i software alone versus $84,698 for a single partition at the same user count.
